Chinese doctor admit selling babies

A Chinese doctor has admitted in court
that she persuaded parents to give up their newborn babies so that she could sell them to human traffickers.
The official Xinhua News Agency said obstetrician Zhang Shuxia stood trial on Monday in northern Shaanxi province's Fuping county in a case that exposed the operations of a baby trafficking ring
that operated across several provinces.
Xinhua says Zhang sold seven babies between late 2011 and July 2013 to human traffickers after getting their parents to give them up by telling
them the babies were incurably sick. One of the babies died.
Child trafficking is a serious problem in China, where traditional preference for male heirs and a strict one-child policy has driven a thriving market in baby boys.

Gunmen Kidnap Bayelsa PDP Treasurer's Wife,Son In Opume Community

Gunmen today stormed the Opume Community in Ogbia local government area of Bayelsa State, abducting the wife and son of the state treasurer of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Gbalipre Turner.
Gbalipre Turner, is the younger brother of  a close associate of President Goodluck Jonathan and paramount ruler of Opume Kingdom, HRH King Amalate Turner.
Command spokesman, Mr Alex Akhigbe(DSP) told LEADERSHIP NEWS MEN that  the gunmen invaded the community and shot into the air sporadically to scare away any resistance and abducted the wife and son from their family  house in Opume.
"I received the information that the wife and son of the younger brother to King Turner was on Thursday evening kidnapped by yet-to-be identified kidnappers.
"Right now, our men have been deployed to the creeks to hunt down the kidnappers.
"Although the kidnappers have not made any contact with the family, we are waiting to establish contact so that we can follow up," Akhigbe said
Meanwhile, at least three persons were killed with machete cuts on today in an inter communal land dispute between Akenfa and Agudama-Epie communities in Yenagoa , Bayelsa State.
The three persons killed were said to be on the disputed land when they were attacked.
Already, one of the corpses has been recovered, while search was on for the other two as at press time.
All the victims were said to be indigenes of Agudama-Epie, depicting fear of reprisals as residents are apprehensive.
The situation triggered an open fight between youths of both communities as schools and businesses in the area were abruptly shut down.
Security has also been beefed up at the Yenagoa Campus of the Nigerian Law School and the Headquarters of the Central Naval Command, all located at Agudama-Epie.
LEADERSHIP confirms that the intervention of the State Security outfit, "Operation Doo Akpor," quelled the tensed situation.
It was gathered that the lingering land dispute has generated frosty relations between Akenfa and Agudama-Epie communities.
It was also learnt that no fewer than five youths who sustained machete injuries are currently receiving medical treatment in an undisclosed hospital in the state capital.
A top security source in the state alleged that government had been complacent on the dispute between both communities ,as he appealed to the state government to take over the disputed land for peace reign in the area.
When contacted, Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Alex Akhigbe confirmed that there were casualties, but could not give the exact figure.
Akhigbe said a team of policemen had been deployed to the scene of the fight and had been put under control.

osun monarch killed at ilashe ijesa

Some chiefs and residents of Ilashe Ijesa in Obokun Local Government Area of Osun State on Thursday narrated how the monach of the town, Oba Adesina Anibijuwon, was killed by suspected members of Odua People’s Congress, who allegedly strangled him and left his corpse inside his residence which they set ablaze.
According to report from punch, those who recovered his corpse from the building said the charred remains of Anibijuwon were taken to the mortuary at Ladoke Akintola University of Technology Teaching Hospital in Osogbo by Osun Ambulance Service at around 10.30pm on Wednesday.
Some residents  said the officials of the state fire service, who came to put out the inferno, ran out of water.
Some residents wondered why some chiefs in the town went into hiding when the hoodlums invaded the palace, urging the police to interrogate them to see if they were culpable.
The Commissioner for Information, Mr. Sunday Akere; his counterpart at the Ministry of Home, Culture and Tourism, Mr. Sikiru Ayedun; and the Special Adviser on Security, Mr. Amos Adekunle, who visited the  town expressed shock on seeing the extent of damage done to the residence of the traditional ruler.
Our correspondent, who also visited the town, observed that the upper floor of the two-storey building where the monarch resided was completely razed.
One of the chiefs, Adejumo Operinmade, told PUNCH Metro that he was informed that some persons, who claimed to be OPC members, came and demanded to see the monarch, but they were told that he was asleep.
He stated that the strange visitors came back and they pointed a gun to the head of the monarch’s housemaid. They allegedly went to late Anibijuwon’s room and strangled the octogenarian monarch who had been blind for over nine years.
Operinmade said, “We were told that some gunmen who claimed to be OPC members came and wanted to see Kabiyesi but they were told that he was sleeping.
“They came back and held the housemaid living with Kabiyesi hostage and went to where Kabiyesi was sleeping. But immediately they came out, fire started and Kabiyesi was burnt inside the house.  His corpse was taken to the mortuary at LAUTECH.”
The Sasore of Ilase, Chief Oluwagbemiga Oke, said to the punch corespondent that there was no land dispute or chieftaincy tussle in the town, wondering why the suspected arsonists killed the monarch.
Chief Jumoke Ogunkeyede, whose brother gave  the burnt residence to the monarch, also said he heard that the hoodlums, who perpetrated the act, had an accident at the outskirts of the town while escaping from the scene.
He said, “We heard that they came in a red Mazda 323 and their car veered off into the bush while they were speeding away. We called journalists  from Osun State Broadcasting Corporation at Ibokun, but when they got there  to take photographs of the car, they saw that it had been set ablaze.
“They also removed the number plate of the car. I believe that they set the car ablaze to hide their identities. But the police could still find a way of unraveling those behind the killing and arson.”...........whats all this na only God can save us

All you need to know about Peter Okoye and Lola Omotayo’s November 17 wedding

The most anticipated celebrity traditional wedding between Peter Okoye and Lola Omotayo, will hold on Sunday, November 17, 2013 at the Arc Events Centre, Victoria Island, Lagos.
On August 6, 2013, Peter proposed to Lola in a grand style, presenting her with a brand new Range Rover Evoque, bouquet of flowers, a hand written sign and a stunning diamond ring.

And according to Encomium, the nuptials is expected to be carnival-like, star-studded,  going by the array of guests already slated to honour the celebrated couple.
While telecommunications giant, Glo boss, Mike Adenuga Jnr. is going to chair the nuptials, gifted comedienne, Helen Paul is no longer going to co-host with fellow comedian, Gbenga Adeyinka.
This is because Helen will be performing at comedian AY’s London show holding that same day.
According to one of the planning committee members:
“Invitations have been sent out, except for few friends who are not in the country at the moment. Apart from the afore-mentioned names, we’re also expecting some other celebrities, which I don’t want to mention.”
Although, Peter’s mum passed on a year ago, his father, Mr. Okoye will lead other siblings from their base in Ifite-Dunu, Akwa Village, Anambra State, to Lagos for marriage rites.
Peter, 33, is going to be the first celebrity son of Mr. Okoye to marry. His brother, Paul has already proposed to his babymama and long time girlfriend, Anita Itokwu-Isama, but yet to pick a date.
However, the woman that rocks the life of their elder brother, Jude, 38, is yet to be known, as he has not been linked romantically with any lady.
Meanwhile, there is massive demand for the wedding aso ebi and headgear, otherwise known as gele, that go for N40, 000.
As you read this, we can tell you authoritatively that the demand has soared, but only few were able to get. Those who didn’t get the complete aso ebi have gone for the N5000 headgear.
An inside source said:
“There is no aso-ebi for men, except for family and close friends. However, the groom, Peter has given out free cap (blue) to friends, especially celebrities, who are excluded from the male aso-ebi. By now, they should have gotten theirs, with access card. The access card admits one person and should be brought to the venue.”

Paris restaurants usher ugly customers to back tables

Two upscale restaurants in Paris reserve their best tables for attractive customers and assign people who are considered ugly to corner tables where they will be less visible, a French daily has revealed.
A fat billfold is no guarantee of a good table at upscale Paris restaurants, which arrange customers based on two very specific categories: the attractive and the ugly.
Hostesses and waitresses at the chic restaurants Georges, on the rooftop of the Centre Pompidou, and Café Marly, overlooking the Louvre’s courtyard, have to observe strict seating arrangements based on looks, according to a French daily.
Tables near the entrance or on the terrace of Georges are kept for good-looking people, while those considered unattractive are quickly ushered to tables in the back or in the corners, Le Canard Enchainé newspaper revealed based on interviews with former wait staff.
At Café Marly, hostesses cannot promise reservations for tables on the terrace over the telephone, and must wait until guests arrive on premises to decide if they “deserve” their better tables.
One of the ex-waitresses quoted remembered being reprimanded: “What are you thinking? What are those “non-attractives” doing at that table!? The system is not that complicated… This is very bad for our image!”
The two high-end eateries belong to businessman Gilbert Costes, who the waitresses said sometimes showed up to the restaurants himself to instruct employees on how to sort the two kinds of customers.
However, exceptions are made for celebrities, who are always seated at the most prominent tables, regardless of looks, the report said.

Scores of bodies in Nigerian morgue after Islamist raid

Dozens of corpses in military uniform have been brought to a Nigerian morgue after Boko Haram fighters last week launched an attack targeting security forces in the Yobe state capital of Damaturu, AFP reported Monday, citing a hospital source.
"We have received lots of bodies in the last three days from the attacks. I counted 35 bodies in military uniform," a senior official at the Damaturu Specialist Hospital told AFP.
It was not immediately clear whether the bodies belonged to troops or insurgents since members of the Islamist group have repeatedly used military uniforms as a disguise when they attack.
Boko Haram fighters armed with guns and explosives stormed Damaturu after dark on Thursday, torching four buildings and sparking a fierce gun battle.
Yobe state military spokesman Lazarus Eli said no data was available on a death toll, but did not deny reports alleging dozens of troops died in the attack.
Troop fatalities in Islamist clashes are rarely disclosed and officials are under pressure not to reveal such information.
Nigeria's sweeping offensive against Boko Haram has entered its fifth month and the military has described the Islamist group as being in disarray and no longer capable of attacking major population centres.
But the success of the operation remains unclear and the attack in Damaturu, apparently carried out by a significant number of insurgents in a heavily fortified city, has cast further doubt on the effectiveness of the military offensive.
President Goodluck Jonathan had declared a state of emergency across the northeast in mid-May and vowed to permanently end the uprising. Jonathan must now decide whether to extend the emergency measures when the six-month mandate expires next month.
The conflict has killed thousands since 2009.
Boko Haram has attacked Christians, Muslims, students, politicians and a range of other groups seen as opposed to the creation of a state governed by strict Islamic law.

Cossy Orjiakor insures her breasts for $1.6M (N256million)

A report by Vanguard, claims that
controversial actress, Cossy Orjiakor
has insured her breasts for $1.6
million.
Read the report below:
The actress was reported to have
agreed to a deal to insure her
bloated mammary glands for a
whooping $1.6million amounting to
N256million.
The deal according to source, was
introduced to her by an American
friend who also dragged Enhanced
Silicon Inc. responsible for insuring
breasts of famous foreign celebrities
into the deal.
The company, which insured the
bosóms of Pamela Anderson and
Dolly Parton agreed to the deal just
before Cossy's recent birthday bash,
where she displayed her
endowments for the world to see.
The booby actress will be travelling
to Los Angeles in two weeks to sign
on the dotted lines. "I specifically
asked for $1.6 million," Cossy was
quoted as saying.
As part of the deal awaiting her
signature, there will be limits on how
many men and women who would
touch her bósoms each month. Also,
the bósoms have all been given
names and must now be treated as
people in future movie roles. That
means that Enhanced Silicon Inc.
will determine how much a movie
producer will pay each bosóm for an
appearance in a movie. "The
downside of the deal is that I may
get dressed', Cossy added.
Cossy seems pretty excited about
the deal as sources maintained that
each of the endowment will be
named and anyone who prefers to
touch will have to pay for it just as
Enhanced Silicon Inc. will
henceforth, decide the amount
producers will pay per breast, for
appearance in a movie

"YOU ARE A LIAR",SHIZZI TELLS DON JAZZY

Sheyi 'Shizzi' Akerele,a top ranking poducer who produced Wande Coal's version of the controversial song 'Baby Face', which Don Jazzy says was stolen from him, has released a statement explaining his involvement in the whole issue. He mentions that he produced Wande's hit song 'Go Low' which he never got credit for. See his statement below:
I have heard and seen some folks rants about me stealing production credit for Wande Coal's new single "Baby Face" and I would like to clarify this issue. I was only doing my job by making the beat for Wande and that's what I did. I don't see any reason why people should
jump into quick conclusions without taking their time to really dig into the matter for facts.
Two years back, I remember I created a demo for Wande Coal's "Shawty Go Low" and someone else took the credits. I was in shock because I had plans to finish the song with Wande and was hoping it would be released as a single which I produced. Wande Coal just released a studio demo version of Baby
Face which he says he recorded with Don Jazzy last year.

Andy Murray in 'gun scare'

British police said on Friday
they had arrested four men on
suspicion of brandishing a gun at
tennis star Andy Murray, although
media reports suggest they were
fans with nothing more threatening
than a tennis racquet.
The suspects' car was stopped and
searched and "no trace of a firearm
was found", Scotland Yard said in a
statement, adding that the men had
been released on bail pending
further investigation.
According to the Sun newspaper, the
men tapped on the window of
Murray's stationary car after a book-
signing in London on Wednesday,
trying to get him to sign a racquet.
The Wimbledon champion drove off
so they got back in their Mercedes --
but not before a member of the
public had called the police and
reported that one of them had a
weapon.
"Police were called at 19:00 on
Wednesday by a member of the
public reporting that they had seen a
male in a Mercedes car in Avenue
Road (northwest London) in
possession of a firearm," the police
statement said.
"The car was subsequently stopped
in Tadema Road (southwest London)
and four men were arrested on
suspicion of being in possession of a
firearm.
"They were taken into custody and
on Thursday bailed to return on a
date in late January, pending further
investigation.
"A search of the car was conducted
and no trace of a firearm was found.
Enquiries continue."
In July, Murray became the first
British man to win Wimbledon for 77
years, although he missed the latter
part of the season after undergoing
surgery on his back in September

'Birthday rapist' gets 39 life terms

So-called "birthday rapist" Mlungisa Mtshali was sentenced to 39 life terms for 39 rapes by the Johannesburg Magistrate's Court on Friday, SABC radio news reported.
He was sentenced to another 212
years on more than 70 additional
charges of sexual assault, kidnapping
and theft. The life sentences will run
concurrently.
Mtshali was dubbed the "birthday
rapist" because he reportedly told his victims it was his birthday and invited them to celebrate with him at a nearby restaurant or bar. He would later ask them to accompany him, in a metered taxi, to fetch his sister or a friend in Hillbrow or central Johannesburg, where he lured the women into a hotel room
and raped them.

The tally of houses lost to forest
fires passed 200 on Sunday as brigades in south-
eastern Australia battled blazes threatening
dozens of homes.
Residents were warned of torrid fire conditions
to come.
Lower temperatures and calmer winds provided
relief for worn out firefighters, bolstered by
fresh crews who drove overnight to reach the
Blue Mountains hot spot, 70km west of Sydney.
But with winds expected to pick up and scorching
temperatures on their way, the Rural Fire
Service (RFS) warned of more death and
destruction.
One person has died and, at the last count, 208
houses have been lost since the crisis erupted
on Thursday.
"Crews have been back-burning overnight to
strengthen containment lines and are on alert to
switch to active firefighting if properties come
under threat," RFS spokesperson Russell Taylor
said. "We'll be deploying even more today."
Fire ban
A total ban on lighting fires outside was
declared by the New South Wales state
government.
"I'm increasingly concerned about the potential
for significant fire runs and consequential
damage if the weather conditions materialise
like they're indicating they could over this
week," state Premier Barry O'Farrell said.
RFS commissioner Shane Fitzsimmons warned of
"some pretty deteriorating, awful, conditions
over the coming days."
A mostly volunteer force of 1 500 backed by
water-bombing aircraft is helping Blue
Mountains residents defend their homes from
fires that have burned more than 100 000
hectares.
The dozens of blazes have a combined perimeter
of over 400 kilometres.
Matt Stephens, who lives in the Blue Mountains
hamlet of Sun Valley, told local news agency AAP
that he would stay and defend his home for as
long as he could, and then dash for safety.
"We've about 50 metres of lawn at the back of
the house and the front basically goes straight
on to the road so I'm hopeful," Stephens said.
"We've got all the stuff by the door ready to
go."

DISASTER:Plane crash in Belgium

A plane carrying 10 parachutists crashed
shortly after takeoff in southern Belgium on
Saturday, killing all the passengers on board, the
local mayor said.
"The plane took off from Temploux aerodrome with
10 parachutists and probably a pilot on board and
crashed around 10 minutes later in a field. All those
on board are unfortunately dead. The toll is 10 or
11 victims," the mayor of Fernelmont, Jean-Claude
Nihoul, told AFP.
He added it was "very difficult" to be more precise
given the state of the aircraft which was
"unrecognisable" after being "burned up".
The small plane came down around 250m from
houses near the village of Marchovelette, 10km
from the southern city of Namur, the mayor added.
"I just saw a plane lose its right wing in mid-flight
and crash. I heard a massive 'bang' towards the
south of Marchovelette. I didn't see anyone escape
with a parachute," one witness told local television
channel RTL.

TECHNOLOGY:microsoft release windows 8.1

Microsoft is releasing its long-
awaited Windows 8.1 upgrade as a free
download starting on Thursday. It addresses
some of the gripes people have had with
Windows 8, the dramatically different
operating system that attempts to bridge
the divide between tablets and PCs.
Windows 8.1 still features the dual worlds
that Windows 8 created when it came out
last October. On one hand, it features a
touch-enabled tile interface resembling
what's found in tablet computers.
On the other, there's the old desktop mode
where the keyboard and mouse still reign.
The update adds some new finger- and
gesture-friendly shortcuts for touch-based
apps, while restoring some respect for the
desktop mode that a billion PC users have
become accustomed to.
The release comes as sales of traditional
desktop and laptop computers continue to
decline because consumers are spending
money instead on the latest smartphones and
tablets.
It also comes at a time of transition for
Microsoft as the Redmond, Washington,
company focuses on devices and services, not
just software.
Earlier this month, Microsoft struck a deal
to acquire Nokia's phone business and patent
rights for more than $7bn. Microsoft is also
searching for a new CEO to replace Steven A
Ballmer, who announced last month that he
plans to retire within the next year.
The Window 8.1 update is free for current
owners of Windows 8. It's available starting
at 11:00 GMT on Thursday in New York,
which corresponds to the start of Friday in
New Zealand. Simply go to the Windows
Store app to find it.
It may take a few hours for updates to
reach everyone. Computers with Windows 8.1
already installed will go on sale on Friday
local time. That's also when people will be
able to buy stand-alone copies of Windows
8.1.
The changes range from the cosmetic to
improved functionality:
Start me up - The Start button is back in
desktop mode, although not the way it was
before Windows 8 came along. In Windows 7
and before, a click on Start would have
brought up programs and important folders
in a list.
Now, one tap on Start flips you back to the
new tile interface, where you can click or tap
tiles to open programs. A long press brings up
crucial settings such as the Control Panel.
Boot to desktop - You can now start up the
machine in desktop mode, bypassing the tiles
for a short time. That removes some of the
headache for companies that want to use
Windows 8 but don't want to buy a touch
screen monitor for every employee.
Onscreen keyboard swipes - The onscreen
keyboard now includes the ability to type
numbers or punctuation marks by swiping up
or away from certain keys on the standard
"qwerty" layout, eliminating the need to
toggle between numeric and alphabetic
layouts. You can also select from suggested
words mid-stream using side swipes and taps
on the virtual spacebar.
Gesture-enabled apps - You can now wave in
the air in front of the front-facing camera
to get a response. For example, in the new
app Bing Food & Drink, a right-to-left wave
in "Hands Free Mode" flips through pages of
a recipe.
Quicker tile organisation - You can tap and
hold Windows tiles with your finger to move
them. Another couple taps will allow you to
resize them in one of four sizes. In the
previous version, you had to go back to the
mouse or touchpad and right-click on tiles to
do this, and you were limited to two sizes.
Easier apps access - Finding all your apps
takes just a swipe up on your start screen, as
long as you don't do it from beyond the
bottom edge. Before, you had to swipe up
from the bottom edge, then tap on the All
Apps button.
Automatic updates - Apps update in the
background, replacing the constant
reminders to go to the Windows Store to
update the apps yourself.
Smaller tablets - Windows 8.1 now has a
home screen that looks good in portrait mode
on screens measuring 18cm to 20cm
diagonally.
Lock screen access - You can now answer
Skype calls or take photos from the lock
screen without having to log in. Just swipe
down. You can also set other apps like
Twitter to send notifications when the
screen is locked.
Better multitasking - In Windows 8.1, you
can run up to four apps at once side by side,
double the previous amount, though you need
a large, high-resolution monitor to do so (On
its own, Microsoft's Surface tablets are not
big enough for more than two).
You can resize panes using a slider that
moves side to side, instead of being limited
to one larger window and one slender one.
This is still not as capable as Windows 7 or in
desktop mode, where you can open dozens of
items in windows that can be resized both
horizontally and diagonally. And many app
makers have yet to adapt, meaning some apps
still appear as a thin sliver, even if you want
them to take up half the screen.
Global search - Typing while on the tile-
based start screen will pull up multiple
search results - if applicable - from your
computer, the web and the Windows app
store. If you're searching for a musician,
you'll see a list of popular songs you can play
using Xbox Music, and if it's someone
famous (like US President Barack Obama)
you'll see biographical details, videos and
other information. Before, you had to choose
where to search: In apps, settings, computer
file or on the internet.
E-mail update - The standard-issue Mail app
now has a "power pane" on left-hand side
with folders for updates from social
networks like Facebook, messages from
favourite contacts and newsletters. Some of
these features work only with Microsoft
accounts such as Hotmail and Outlook.com,
though. A new "sweep" command deletes
multiple messages with a couple taps.
Better browsing - No longer are you limited
to 10 open tabs in the tile version of
Internet Explorer. Before, web pages
automatically closed without prompts when
you try to open more.
You can open as many as you want now.
Better yet, you can have two different
websites displayed side by side, the way
you've long been able to before Windows 8
came along.
Xbox music refresh - The music streaming
app now optimizes playback over discovery
with a layout that has more lists and smaller
photos.
It also adds the ability to create playlists
from any website with a couple taps. When on
a website featuring artists, swipe in from
the right edge and tap the Share button
followed by the Music button. It will create a
song playlist based on those artists, which
you can then stream for free.
Picture editing - A picture editor with pre-
set effects comes with the update, allowing
for photo touch-ups, cropping, contrast
changes and other features.
Xbox One integration - You can pick up
where you left off if you start playing a
video purchased on Xbox Video on a tablet
and then watch the rest on Microsoft's
upcoming game console, Xbox One. AP

YOU NEED MOTIVATION? There's an app for that

Ever suspect you do more
housework than your spouse? Or that
certain tasks at work raise your blood
pressure?
Maybe you wonder why you are sneezing
more lately, or if carbs are really what is
making you tired after lunch?
Turns out, there's an app or gadget to test
all of that. Advancements in wearable body
sensors, mobile applications and other
gadgets mean that nearly everything we do
can be captured, logged and analysed.
And everyday consumers are jumping at the
chance to conduct their own experiments -
tracking sleep, caffeine intake, kids'
studying habits, household chores, even
whether a baby is nursing more frequently
on Mom's left breast versus her right.
"I don't know if I'd use the word
'obsessed'," said Ernesto Ramirez, a self-
tracking devotee who helped to organise a
two-day conference on the subject last
week in San Francisco.
Speakers at past "Quantified Self"
conferences have included a man who
developed his own app to see if he could walk
every street in Manhattan and a dad who
used trackers on his kids to monitor chores.
"I think there's an overall trend toward
curiosity and proving knowledge of one's
self in the world," Ramirez said.
When Tim Davis of Beaver, Pennsylvania,
tipped the scales at 144kg two years ago, he
bought a Fitbit gadget to track his physical
activity and the Lose It! app on his phone to
track calories.
He bought a Wi-Fi-enabled scale that
published his daily weight on his Twitter
feed and turned to other apps to track his
pulse, blood pressure, daily moods and
medications.
At one point, Davis said he was using 15
different apps and gadgets, which he said
helped him drop 29kg by that following year.
"It's the second-by-second, minute-by-
minute changes that really did it," said
Davis, 39. "If you're the type of person who
likes gadgets and devices and to collect
metrics, you're also the kind of person who
does not like gaps in data."
A paediatrician in Kansas City, Missouri,
Natasha Bugert, said apps that track
newborn feedings and sleep patterns have
become wildly popular among her patients
and she now encourages parents to send her
the data before their appointments.
"In the first few weeks, parents are so
tired. It's really hard for them to give you
objective data," Bugert said.
Public health advocates and researchers say
tracking technology could be used to
encourage people to use less fuel, conserve
water or drive slower by giving them real-
time feedback on their daily habits. It also
could expose causes of medical conditions
that baffle doctors.
HopeLab, based in Redwood, California, is
one nonprofit looking to harness technology
to improve health. It has developed a $30
movement-tracking device for kids called a
"Zamzee", and a website that rewards
activity with online points and badges.
HopeLab has developed video games for
young cancer patients that lets them
pretend to blast cancer cells. Researchers
there say their studies have shown that the
game improved patients' moods and
encouraged them to stick with treatment.
"When you give people a sense of autonomy,
a sense of agency, that can actually be very
transformative to their health," said
HopeLab spokesperson Richard Tate.
Ramirez said he thinks the next step will be
embedding sensors in nearly everything a
person encounters throughout the day and
linking that information together. Think of a
car that won't start if you've consumed too
much alcohol or a light bulb that changes
colours when it's time to go to bed.
Industry watchers say these kinds of data-
driven apps are finding their place in a
market that has struggled to profit from
advertising.
Raj Aggarwal, chief executive of Localytics,
a Boston-based analytics firm, says mobile
games are still by far the most popular
among consumers, but their fan base can be
fickle. If a data-logging app is useful
enough, it can convince consumers that they
should pay for upgraded subscriptions or
premium services that earn the developers
money.
One mobile app called "GymPact" has found
a novel way of making money off its
consumers' data.
The app lets people bet against one another
as to whether they will go to the gym. The
non-exercisers have to pay the exercisers,
with GymPact taking a cut.

ASUU REJECTS #600 OFFER

Varsity teachers remained adamant last night,
saying their strike would go on, despite the
government's shifting of its position. The
strike has been on for four months.
More cash has been pledged for projects on
the campuses. Besides, the earned allowances
due to the teachers have been increased from
the initial N30 billion offer, which the
Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU)
rejected. The teachers are insisting on the
2009 agreement, which they say President
Goodluck Jonathan was part of. Besides, they
say, they do not trust the government.
According to a circular by the Vice Chancellor
of the Federal University, Otuoke, Bayelsa
State, Prof. Bolaji Aluko, to the staff of the
school, quoted yesterday by the news website,
Sahara Reporters, the government has pledged
to spend N200 billion on the universities in the
2014 budget and the same amount annually for
the next three to four years.
This is in addition to the N100 billion already
made available this year, but which ASUU has
rejected.
The government has also increased to N40
billion, as a first installment, funds for the
payment of earned allowances to the striking
lecturers – an improvement from the N30
billion previously released.
On the earned allowances, Aluko said:
"Government will top it up with further
releases once universities are through with the
disbursement of this new figure of N40
million. So, Vice-Chancellors are urged to
expedite this disbursement within the shortest
possible time using guiding templates that have
been sent by the CVC," the circular said.
Aluko said the latest development followed
meetings on September 19 and Oct 11 of
representatives of the Association of Vice-
Chancellors of Nigerian Universities, led by its
Chairman, Prof. Hamisu of Abubakar Tafawa
Balewa University (ATBU) and ASUU
representatives led by its President, Dr.Nasir
Fagge, with Vice-President Namadi Sambo and
Minister of Education Nyesome Wike.
A source in the Ministry of Education last
night also confirmed that the meeting took
place.
"But the government decided to leave the
announcement of the decision to the ASUU
chiefs," the source said.
It was gathered that Sambo urged ASUU to
call off the strike, as he apologised for the
"take-it-or-leave-it" comments credited to
Minister of Finance Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala
at the beginning of the strike. The Minister
did not seem to have been involved in either
meeting, perhaps as the government's way of
soothing the feelings of the university
teachers.
Other points of agreement at the meetings
include:
•Project Prioritisation: Universities will now be
allowed to determine their priorities and not
be "rail-roaded" into implementing a pre-
determined set of projects with respect to
the NEEDS assessment. Decisions are not to
be centralized;
•TETFund Intervention: The government
assured the teachers that the operations of
the TETFund will not be impaired, and that the
regular TETFund intervention disbursement to
universities will continue, unaffected. So the
NEEDS assessment capital outlays are in
addition to regular TETFund intervention;
•Project Monitoring: A new Implementation
Monitoring Committee (IMC) for the NEEDS
Assessment intervention for universities has
been set up to take over from the Suswam
Committee. The new one is under the Federal
Ministry of Education and chaired by the
Minister of Education. In addition, to build
confidence and ensure faithful implementation
and prevent any relapse as before, the Vice
President will meet quarterly with the
implementors to monitor progress.
.Blueprint: ASUU was mandated to submit a
blueprint for revitalising the universities to
the Vice President.
Prof. Aluko stated that a signed document will
soon be issued to itemise the full issues on
which the consensus was reached.
But ASUU last night was unimpressed with the
new offer. National Treasurer Dr. Ademola
Aremu said the offer failed to meet the
teachers' expectations.
He said the offer falls short of the agreement
signed with ASUU by the government.
Aremu insisted that ASUU would not end the
strike until the 2009 agreement is fully
implemented by injecting N500 billion into the
universities yearly to shore up the system's
quality.
Aremu, who spoke to our correspondent on the
telephone, said any offer below what is
contained in the signed agreement, would
amount to unilateral repudiation of an
agreement the government willingly signed in
2009.
According to the unionist, ASUU is not making
any new demand, but a mere implementation of
an agreement. He pointed out that the
Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed
by both parties in 2009 stated that the
government would commit N1.5 trillion to the
system in three years.
He said: " Even if the Federal Government
made that promise, it would be a unilateral
repudiation of the 2009 agreement. By now,
the government should have injected N500
billion. That amounts to N100 billion in 2012
and N400 billion in the current year.
"As a matter of fact, any new commitment
from the Federal Government is belated.
Implementation of the agreement ought to
have started before this year. I don't think
there is any way we can trust this government,
going by its past behaviour on this issue.
"The mandate from our principal as at the last
time we met was that we won't end the strike
until the agreement is fully implemented.
"We do not need promises again. What we need
now is actual implementation. What if they do
not release the funds again after making the
promise?
"It was this same Mr President that mid-wifed
the agreement in 2009 when he was the Vice
President. The MoU was in his custody. He
studied the agreement well before asking then
President Umaru Yar'Adua to sign it. We can't
trust this government.

Hackers plunder Adobe's user source code

Software titan Adobe Systems on Thursday warned that hackers breached its defenses and stole source code along with credit card numbers and other information relating to nearly three million customers.

"Very recently, Adobe's security team discovered sophisticated attacks on our network, involving illegal access of customer information as well as source code for numerous Adobe products," Adobe chief security officer Brad Arkin said in a blog post.

"Our investigation currently indicates that the attackers accessed Adobe customer IDs and encrypted passwords on our systems."

Hackers are believed to have taken information relating to 2.9 million Adobe customers. The stolen data was said to include customer names, encrypted credit or debit card numbers, expiration dates and other information relating to people's orders.

It appeared that no decrypted credit or debit card numbers were pilfered, according to Arkin.

"We deeply regret that this incident occurred," Arkin said. "We're working diligently internally, as well as with external partners and law enforcement, to address the incident."

Adobe was resetting the passwords of customers whose information was taken and alerting people whose credit or debit card numbers were swiped.

The California-based company was also investigating the theft of source code crafted into its products and said it didn't believe it increased the risk of hackers breaking into programs people may be using.

Adobe makes widely used computer programs including Acrobat, Reader, Photoshop and a ColdFusion web application development tool.

Brian Krebs of the website KrebsOnSecurity said in a blog post that it appeared the same attackers recently struck data brokers and a US-funded center devoted to honing skills involved in the investigation and prosecution of cyber crime.

It remained to be seen whether those breaches exploited Adobe software.

MANDELA FILM GETS INTERNATIONAL AWARD

A film about the life of former president Nelson Mandela

received an award at the Aspen Filmfest, its producers said on Thursday.
The film, titled Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom, which premiered at the Toronto film festival last month, received the Audience Favourite Feature Award in the United States on Wednesday night.
It was up against The Fight Estate, August, Osage Country, Nebraska, and One Chance. Some of those movies included actresses Julia Roberts and Meryl Streep.
In the Mandela production, Idris Elba played Mandela while Naomi Harris played Winnie Madikizela-Mandela.
South African actress Terry Pheto co-starred in the film.
The Aspen Filmfest, which is an affiliate of Aspen Film, one of Colorado's most active film arts organisations, is an internationally recognised film festival.
"Even though the Aspen Filmfest is a small festival, it is very prestigious. It has the best of the line-up for Oscar contenders for the year-end in the run up to the 2014 Academy Awards," Anant Singh, the film producer, said in a statement.
"We are delighted that [this movie] came out tops, especially in contention with these quality films."

Photos-At the Lagos plane crash scene

Reports on Twitter suggest the small passenger plane
which crash-landed at Lagos airport was carrying the
body of one of Nigeria's most prominent governors.
The Associated Airlines plane was flying from Nigeria's
commercial capital to Akure, a southwestern town about
140 miles (225 km) away, with seven crew and 20
passengers.
The body of Dr Olusegun Agagu, former Governor of Ondo
state, was reportedly being conveyed in the plane by
several members of his family when it crashed at Murtala
Muhammed International Airport.Rescue workers douses a part of the wreckage of the

SELF-DRIVING CARS ON DISPLAY AT GADGET FAIR

A car that drives itself and glasses that translate a
menu as you read it are some of the glimpses of
tomorrow on offer at a gadget fair near Tokyo that began
on Tuesday.
The Cutting-Edge IT & Electronics Comprehensive
Exhibition (CEATEC) threw open its doors to thousands of
visitors eager to sample gizmos they will be using in
future.
The highlight of the tech fair for many is Japanese
carmaker Nissan, which showcased self-driving cars that
allow the driver to kick back and take their eyes off the
road.
A series of sensors constantly monitors the road and
objects nearby, turning the wheel automatically to avoid
obstacles. "Most accidents are caused by human error,"
said Nissan in a release.
Vehicle makers are working to integrate automobiles and
houses, with the vehicle able to power the home -
especially useful in times of blackouts caused by natural
disasters.
Honda is showing off a mock installation in which a
motorbike powers a gigantic kettle.
"Welcome to the future garage that Honda has designed.
This is how automobiles and communities will be
connected," said Honda president Takanobu Ito.

Propylene found on saturn's moon

Houston - Nasa's Cassini spacecraft has found propylene, a chemical used to make household plastic containers, on Saturn's moon Titan, the space agency said. "This is the first definitive detection of the plastic ingredient on any moon or planet, other than Earth," Nasa said. A small amount of propylene was identified in Titan's lower atmosphere by Cassini's composite infrared spectrometer, which measures heat radiation, the agency reported in Monday's edition of the Astrophysical Journal Letters. By isolating the same signal at various altitudes within the lower atmosphere, researchers identified the chemical's unique thermal fingerprint with a high degree of confidence, Nasa said. "This chemical is all around us in everyday life, strung together in long chains to form a plastic called polypropylene," said Conor Nixon, a scientist at Nasa's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, and lead author of the paper. "That plastic container at the grocery store with the recycling code 5 on the bottom - that's polypropylene." The chemical is also used to make car bumpers and other consumer products. The discovery could help scientists understand the "chemical zoo" that makes up Titan's hazy brownish atmosphere, said Scott Edgington, Cassini's deputy project scientist at Nasa's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California. The Cassini-Huygens mission is a co-operative project of Nasa, the European Space Agency and the Italian Space Agency.

REASON FOR BBM ON ANDROID AND IPHONE

I think it is no more a news that BlackBerry Messenger in a matter of weeks, possibly this month, Black will be available for download on Android phones and Apple’s iPhone. The news came alive when Samsung mobile been reported to be running adverts to spread this news in a few different African countries during the last Manchester United vs. Chelsea match. The advert briefly appeared on Samsung Ghana’s YouTube account before being taken down.

Blackberry  CEO, Thorsten Heins, at the BlackBerry Live conference in May,  had earlier made the announcement that BBM which had been the major attraction to Blackberry phone, apart from the pride of owning one, was to become a multi-platform application. Now, the company has offered some insight as to why it is making this move. According to a Wall Street Journal report, BlackBerry might decide to spin off one of its divisions.
BlackBerry is trying to determine whether it should spin off its BlackBerry Messenger service to a separate company, the Wall Street Journal reported on Tuesday, citing people who claim to have knowledge of the plans. The newly formed company would be known as BBM Inc., according to the Journal’s sources.
As BlackBerry faces the prospect of potentially having to part out its more valuable assets for sale, BBM is a natural opportunity that comes to mind, and the recent decision to take the messaging platform to both iOS and Android makes a lot more sense once one considers that it means diversifying the brand prior to a potential sale.
The possible BBM spinoff comes after BlackBerry announced that it had appointed a special committee to explore “strategic alternatives” for its ailing option. BlackBerry claims to be open to any and all options, including selling its operation to another firm.
Since its inception, BlackBerry Messenger has been one of the favourite applications for BlackBerry users worldwide, and perhaps the only reason why many had chosen to buy the phone. The app allows users to instant-message with other BlackBerry users without paying text-messaging fees.
“You can make the argument that BlackBerry has more to gain by encouraging BBM network growth once it starts offering stuff on multiple platforms, including ones that don’t have fast-dwindling user bases, and that it stands to gain additional revenue from those users via marketing or potential commercial services made available to BBM in the future,” suggested Techcrunch writer, Darrell Etherington.
He adds that the real reason to open up BBM may be “to put some shine on the apple at this stage of the game; accomplishing the kind of growth needed to make BBM a sustainable business would be tough in the face of other messaging applications like WhatsApp, but you can still inject a fair amount of value for a prospective buyer by offering something that is platform agnostic.”
BlackBerry is experimenting with one-to-many broadcasting via BBM Channels, and the Wall Street Journal said Blackberry is looking into building desktop applications as well. The report also states that a cross-platform BBM has been tested internally for as long as three years, which means this was definitely held back as a last resort until it was clear BlackBerry-only BBM wasn’t going to mount a return to positive growth.
The launch of BBM for iOS and Android appears even more imminent, as BlackBerry had accidentally published user guides to its website. The guides explain in detail how the app will function, how to get started, and other features.
At launch, Heins had said that only messaging and group features will be available, but promised that the rest of BBM will eventually make its way to the Android and iOS versions including screen sharing, BBM voice, and the newer BBM channels.

BENSON OKONKWO INTERVIEW WITH BLUEPRINT.COM

Enugu-based, fast-rising Nollywood actor Benson Okonkwo is probably the most talked about in the Nigeria movie industry because of his unique roles, which many people continue to wrongly associate with his real life personality.”
Benson was  interviewed by Blueprintng.com and he has these to say...........

Talking about the movie that brought you out, there is a particular movie about gays which has gotten you more accusations and criticisms than accolades. Could you talk about it?

I have promised myself that I will no longer talk about the movie. It’s really funny that Nigeria is a country where people attribute an actor’s role to his real life character.
If I’m given a role to play and I played it excellently, does that make me that character in reality? Yet, it is the same Nigerians who will be first to point fingers at those actors that do not act their movie roles well.
It’s quite funny that because I played a gay role then I’m automatically gay. So if I played the role of a police officer, does that makes me one? I just have to thank my fans who repose so much confidence in me, that’s all.

Are you saying that you are not truly homosexual like a whole lot of people believe?
My brother, what else do you want me to tell you. Please, I’m very busy.

Most of your fans have been asking why you had to star in such a movie, yet you keep denying that you are not gay.
I just told you I was doing my job. Period! Why should I call myself an actor if I can’t play a movie role perfectly? Tell me!
And there is another issue here: I’ve noticed that so many people, because of their own mischevious and dirty minds, would fail to look past the sexual scenes in a movie when there are way too many morals to learn. Like most movies, that movie you are talking about was used to pass a message across to the public.

But if some people refuse to grab those messages and choose to focus on those things that satisfy their lustful and mischievous minds, then it’s no one’s fault.

I also heard there is a new movie you just did in which you acted totally nude in a scene. Tell us about it.
The name of the movie is “James Town.” It was directed by an A-list Nollywood director and scriptwriter, Ifeanyi Onyearbor.
My manager, Mr Brown Ene, is a good manager and he called me up and we negotiated and I took the role. It’s a must-see movie.
Now before you start to asking me why and crucifying me, that’s the character I was givien to play. It warrants me to go nude at a point in the movie. It’s a serious movie.
So like I said, as an actor your ability to interpret any role given to you is what makes you a good one. So Nigerians should understand that I was only doing my job. it’s just a movie. It’s a ghetto movie and I was one of the lead characters in it. I also took the role because the pay was so right. It’s coming out soon; I’m sure people will enjoy it. It starred Nollywood stars like Queenth Hilbert, Patience Ozorkwo a.k.a Mama G, Gbenga Richard and musician, Vicko Kings. It will be available in all cinemas.

You are obviously one of the few actors not afraid to go to any length when it comes to your job. What challenges do you face, especially from the public?
The challenge is nothing more than the regular criticism. You come out in public and when people recognise you, they start to look at you strangely. But I’ve developed a very tough skin to criticisms.
I have come to the realization that whatever you do, even if all you do is just do nothing, say nothing, fold your arms and close your eyes, people will always criticize you no matter who you are, so just do what makes you happy as long as you know you are not hurting anyone.
I will always be grateful to my fans who have been encouraging me.

How did you join showbiz?
I started modeling at age 16 and started acting professionally at the age of 23. I have always loved entertainment. I used to act when I was in primary and secondary schools.
Even in our church, a Catholic church, I acted every Good Friday. I used to take the part of Jesus Christ.
I also did dramas with friends at home. My mom noticed this talent, called me and said ‘Benson, you have to go into acting professionally.’ She gave me some money to register with Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN), which I did in the year 2008.
Since then, I have featured in over 30 movies and I’m still counting. Also, I have modeled for Zain (now for Airtel), Wema Bank, Nestle, Gold Circle Condom, Rainbownet, First Bank, Orange Drugs and many too numerous to mention. I have lost count, but I give God the glory.

Apart from acting, you also run a boutique and saloon.
Yes, I have love for fashion and beauty.  I’m known for looking good. My nickname is Mr. Packaging and I was nicknamed that because of my dress sense. It’s just simply because of the way I combine colours and all.
My salon and boutique are in Enugu; Colectibus Unisex Salon. It’s where my fellow actors come to have their hair done, and also my fans. I went into the fashion business because of my love for fashion and style and to reach out to my fans. It’s an exquisite place for distinguished and sophisticated individuals.
You are currently one of the candidates for the “Sexiest in Nollywood” contest. Could you throw more light on that?
I was nominated for Nollywood Sexiest Actor both in the Ghana and Nigerian categories. We were above 150 when we started the quest and now we’ve been screened to 20 and I’m on the top five. I thank my fans for their votes so far. I believe that I’m going to win because I’ve got a charming smile, great height, romantic eyes and good posture and I’m a head turner any day.
Jim Iyke won the first edition and Desmond Elliot won the second. I’m in the top with the likes of Ramsey Noah, Yule Edochie, Van Vicker and John Dumelo. It’s strictly by vote and I believe I’ll win with the help of my fans who have been voting.

You sound like someone who has got the ladies at your fingertips?
That’s normal. I won’t deny that I’m a lady’s man, but one needs to be very disciplined. My mom taught me to be disciplined and treat ladies well.

Manchester city of England had a great opening match yesterday night at the etihad stadium when they thrashed their fellow Enland yohan cabaye-less newcastle counterpart 4-0.

Just before the end of the first half time,Newcastle was down to 10 men as Steven Taylor was sent off the pitch.
In the second half of the match, the home side where superior and kept the first half performance by passing the ball around leaving the visitor with no chance as Yaya Toure increase the goal margin to three with a  superb free kick and a goal from the  former arsenal player introduced from the bench, Samiar Nasri making it 4-0
